Plaster takes a plasterer
Charlotte's older neighborhoods and the historic downtowns around the region still have original plaster ceilings. Covering them with drywall or patching them with joint compound is how cracks come back. We stabilize loose plaster, rebuild what's failed, and finish it so the repair bonds with the original ceiling.
- Cracked and spider-cracked ceilings
- Loose or sagging plaster
- Water-damaged plaster
- Lath-and-plaster repair
- Skim coating
- Swirl and textured plaster
New plaster ceilings
For new homes and remodels, Imperial veneer plaster gives a harder, smoother ceiling than drywall. See plaster vs. drywall.
Plaster ceiling problems we fix
- Cracks: hairline cracks are usually settling; bigger ones can mean the plaster is letting go of the lath.
- Water damage: stains, bubbling paint and soft plaster. Left alone, sections can fall.
- Sagging or bulging: the plaster has separated from the wood lath above it.
- Loose or falling plaster: needs attention right away, for safety.
- Peeling paint: moisture and decades of paint layers.
Why plaster needs a plasterer
Plaster isn't drywall. Patch it with drywall mud and the repair shrinks, cracks and shows. Proper plaster repair re-attaches what can be saved, rebuilds what can't, and bonds the new plaster to the old so the ceiling acts as one surface again. Done right, it:
- Restores the ceiling's strength
- Keeps historic details and character
- Stops cracks from coming back
- Extends the life of the original plaster
Our plaster ceiling repair process
- Inspect the cracks, loose areas, moisture and movement.
- Remove loose and failed plaster, keeping as much original as possible.
- Repair damaged lath or supports.
- Apply new plaster in layers.
- Smooth and blend the repair into the surrounding ceiling.
- Once cured, prime and paint to match.
Historic homes
Original plaster ceilings add character and value. Rather than covering them with drywall, restoration keeps the house what it is, including decorative moldings and traditional lath-and-plaster ceilings.
What affects the price
We don't charge by the hour. Every job is quoted on its own. The things that move the number are:
- How big the damaged or new area is, and how many rooms are involved
- Ceiling height and access (stairwells and two-story rooms need staging)
- The texture or finish that has to be matched
- Whether the damage goes past the drywall into insulation or framing
- Drywall vs. plaster: plaster takes more skill and more steps
- Whether you want us to prime, or hand off to your painter
A photo texted to us is often enough for a ballpark. The written quote comes after we see it.

What customers say
A small place in my bathroom ceiling had to be cut out because of a leak. He repaired it beautifully!! Any debris from their work was cleaned up.
John and his crew were great for repairing some drywall in our rental property! It was super easy communicating and scheduling with them and even better they were able to knock it all out in one day!
Questions we get
Do you charge by the hour?
No. Every project is quoted individually, based on the labor time and materials it actually needs.
How should I get the room ready?
Clear the work area and the space around it as much as you can, and take down light fixtures in the work area beforehand. We bring every tool we need and cover floors and counters.
Do you work with insurance claims?
Yes. We work with insurance companies, homeowners, contractors, property managers and renters, and can document the damage and the repair for your adjuster.
